A Case-Based Approach to Recognizing Child Physical Abuse

Jun 18, 2026 12:15 PM MT

Part 1 - Sentinel Injuries

Sentinel injuries are often the earliest warning signs of physical abuse and may precede more serious or fatal injury. This presentation will discuss the identification, evaluation, and clinical significance of sentinel injuries with emphasis on bruising, oral injuries, and other subtle findings that warrant careful assessment. Through through case-based discussion and evidence-based guidance attendees will develop a trauma informed approach to recognize sentinel injuries, effectively communicate to caregivers and community partners why these injuries elicit concern, and mitigate missed opportunities for intervention.

Part 2 - Fractures

Fractures are among the most common injuries encountered in children with suspected physical abuse, yet distinguishing abusive from accidental injury can be clinically challenging. This presentation will review the medical evaluation of fractures in the context of suspected abuse, including injury

patterns, mechanisms of injury, and developmental considerations that inform clinical decision-making. Using practical examples to discuss current evidence, attendees will gain tools to improve fracture interpretation, strengthen diagnostic confidence, and support accurate assessments.
